With a name roughly meaning “At the mouth of the well of Itza”, Chichen Itza is the mythical ruins of Mayan civilization, dating back to about 600 AD.  This site is full of intriguing facts that you probably did not know.

The construction site chosen for Chichen Itza was between two large natural sink holes nearby that would have provided water year-round. One of these sink holes was thought to have been used as a place of human sacrifice. These sacrifices were made in times of drought, and men, women and children would be thrown in the well as a sacrifice to the Chac God. The Chac God is the Maya God of rain and lightning and these sacrifices were done to end drought.

The El Castillo, also known as the Temple of Kukulcan, is probably the most famous image of Chichen Itza. The temple is a great example of the unbelievably precise mathematic, astronomic and architectural knowledge of the ancient Mayans. The Castillo is a monument in the shape of a pyramid with four staircases on the outside.  It has 365 steps in total with 91 on each side and one at the top. This equals the number of 365 days in a year. Each side of the pyramid represented one season and was used to figure out the best times for sowing seeds or harvesting crops. This huge pyramid, in fact, functioned as one big calendar.

The iconic statue of Jesus Christ, standing atop Corcovado Mountain that overlooks Rio de Janeiro, is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable monuments in the world. The statue is a symbol of peace, warmth and welcoming nature of the Brazilian people. Beyond its breathtaking views, Christ the Redeemer has a colourful history that’s worth exploring.

The statue of Christ the Redeemer was built using reinforced concrete and has an outer shell of 6 million soapstone tiles. It’s believed that the workers who made these tiles frequently wrote notes on the back, meaning this iconic landmark is littered with hidden messages.

The original design of the statue was different from what we see today. It was intended for Jesus Christ to be holding a globe in one hand and a cross in the other. Moreover, the statue should face the rising sun. While the design initially won over the project’s organizers, people called it with the playful name “Christ with a ball.” After a survey from various points throughout the city and consulting with famous Brazilian artist Carlos Oswald, Da Silva Costa came up with a new design: an arms-wide-open Jesus Christ.

It may seem like a short distance, but the trek is not easy; the rough terrain and unpredictable weather present some difficulties. Tourists who are fit and have mountain climbing experience will enjoy this attraction the most, as the peak is accessible all year round. Technical climbing skills are not necessary, but endurance is a must.

Sapa’s picturesque setting

The town of Sapa has a picture-postcard setting, located in a valley with a small lake and surrounded by majestic mountains often enchantingly blanketed in mist. A room with a view is a must here so you can take in the changes to the vistas, especially how the clouds mesmerize with their continual flow into the valley and over the hills. When the clouds and mist decide to clear off, the views of the surrounding mountains are simply jawdropping.

Sapa’s hill tribe culture

There are several minority groups in the Sapa region and we were lucky enough to meet many of them. The most enjoyable experience was walking through Ta Giang Phinh Valley and meeting the Blue Hmong. As the adults worked in the fields, the children played and looked after one another. Unlike a few other minority groups in the area, this region is still completely unchanged by tourism, so it gave us a really authentic insight into the lives of the villagers.

Markets

The local Sapa markets are a feast for the eyes and the taste buds. Fresh produce, just plucked or picked that day, is in abundance while steam rises off giant pots of stock from which vendors ladle out endless bowls of soup. The market is also the place to buy souvenirs, with an array of colorful textiles, costumes and crafts to choose from, often being made right at the stall while the ladies wait for customers. It is one of our favorite markets in Southeast Asia.

The cool morning breeze will make you shivered. Raise the cup of coffee in hand, next to the omelet plate, looking out the window at an umbrella from the hotel with beautiful views. You will experience a gentle Sapa in the morning mist. Wait until sunset, the sun slowly disappeared behind the Hoang Lien Mountains, Sapa is tinted with the color purple, there is something romantic and melancholy.

A great place to hike and cycle

Sapa is northern Vietnam’s premier hiking destination and also one of the best places for cycling in the country. Whether you want to wander through the foothills for a few hours, or do some lengthier and more strenuous exploring, you’ll be able to enjoy the views as you travel between the small villages dotting the landscape.

How to get to Sapa from Ha Noi

A train ticket costs from 18 USD/ person/ way and it takes you a whole night with time to wait for transit and it is hard to sleep well on the train. Now the high way is in perfect condition, you just spend 5 hours and half (included 30 minutes rest stop) to Sapa on the most comfortable and modern bus (with English speaking assistant staff, complimentary water, wifi and transport insurance) and pay around 18 USD/ way/ person.

A famous dish that you should not miss when visiting Bac Ha market is “thang co”. It is a kind of hot pot including innards, bones, fat and meat from a cow, buffalo or horse. Moreover, you can also try some wine made from the fermentation of a local leaf named “hong my”, together with a special dish of bean soup served with corn flour.

Walking to the end of the market, tourists will be impressed by a group of ethnic men playing trumpet made from bronze and dry paddy plant, called “pile”; as well as various booths of pork vendors and those selling local rice and corn cakes.

Dong Van Market

The market is frequently organized at the center of an ancient town up on Dong Van Plateau on Sundays. It is where locals come to exchange their products that they grow and produce at home. In order to join the Dong Van market from the early morning, locals need to prepare from midnight. When the market opens, you can feel as soaking into a colorful festival with many people of different ethnic tribes including Mong, Dao, Nung, Lo Lo and Pa Then. They come to the market not only for shopping but also for seeking a chance to meet and talk to each other about their life and daily work. While men usually come to the market for purchasing cattle and farming tool and for tasting some wine and “thang co”, children are in for eating some ice-cream, a “luxury” dish in the highland that they cannot ask for on a normal day.

For tourists, they are attracted by the beauty in the simple routine, which has been a party of the hard life on the plateau for generations, whenever they take a visit to Dong Van market.

The romantic Sapa market

Lying at the foot of the roof Indochina Fansipan, Sapa is a poetic destination endowed with pure and fresh weather. History

Originally, the town we know as Sapa today was founded by the French in the very beginning of the 20th century. They used it as a hill station in the summer to escape the heat of Ha Noi and enjoy the clean air and beautiful views of surrounding mountains.Due to the independence movement in the 1940s, the city was heavily bombed and nothing was left but ruins. Only in the 1990s did Sapa start to see new infrastructure with the goal of attracting visitors again.

Going through many ups and downs, today, these efforts are paying off. Sapa is once again the number one destination for hikers and trekkers wanting to explore Vietnam’s beautiful countryside, learn more about local culture and customs, and get to meet and interact with members of the famed hill tribes.

Sapa - fairy home of ethnic minorities

There is nowhere in Vietnam tourists can easily meet the local ethnic minorities like in Sapa. The district is the home of a great diversity of ethnic people, including five main groups of Black H'mong, Red Dao, Tay, Giay and Xa Pho. They do not live in center area but in hamlets scattering on the valleys throughout Sapa district. Actually, not until the 20th century did a majority of the ethnic people changed to sedentary lifestyle with intensive farming method on sloping terraces, instead of slash-and-burn culture like in the past. Town of Sapa is where ethnic minority people gather, trade or sell their farming products such as rice, corn, fruits, as well as handicrafts and souvenirs to tourists. There is one interesting fact about ethnic minority people in Sapa that besides their dialects, many of them, especially small children, can speak English pretty well with clear pronunciation.

Spending time visiting ethnic minorities’ villages, observing their daily’s activities or even living homestay, in order to understand more about their culture is now the top priority of visitors, especially international ones. A trip to Sapa would definitely more meaningful with participatory activities, such as learning to make handicrafts or helping the local with farm work! Chances are these boys and girls will tell you lovely stories about their traditions, their lives or even ask you to join their family activities.

Culture

The culture of the locals in Sapa bases on their beliefs and it also shows in the local festivals and traditional architecture or handicraft; their activities and their funeral or marriages of the daily life. 

The traditions of the Black Hmong People

The Black Hmong people are an ethnic minority group native to Vietnam. When one member falls ill, there is one peculiar traditional remedy chosen to help relieve any pain; the base of a cow or ox horn is heated to a high temperature and is then used to burn the skin on the patient’s forehead. This unusual practice is said to divert all thoughts away from the illness by redirecting them to the more apparent and searing pain in the head. It is the remnants of these burns which give the Hmong people the characteristic red marks on their foreheads.

The different Hmong groups

The lineages of the Hmong people are difficult to trace because they’ve been handed down orally, but there remains a rich diversity to the communities that co-exist today. The easiest way to distinguish between them are the colors of their clothing. The groups – the Black, Striped, White, Leng and Green, among others – also have their own customs and traditions, which are more apparent during festivals and weddings.

Indigo clothing

The Hmong ethnic groups are one of the few societies in the country who continue to make the majority of the clothes that they wear. Hemp is commonly used to produce the clothing, and many of the designs feature fine embroidery and elaborate patterns. The secret behind the distinctively deep shades of blue exhibited by many of the garments is the use of the indigo plant. Dye is extracted from the plant’s leaves, and they are then fermented to produce a blue powder which is insoluble in water. Blue dyes were once rare, but thanks to this practice much western clothing can incorporate rich blue hues too.

Tourism and the Hmong

As Vietnam has opened its borders to the surge of global travel, the Hmong people in Vietnam have shifted a large part of their economy from agriculture to tourism. The markets in places like Sapa, Lao Cai and Ha Giang are a colorful sea of handcrafted garments and jewellery, and homestays bring in many curious foreigners who want an inside look at a Hmong community. For the Hmong people, they’re simply adapting to the world around them, much the same as they always have.

Languages

Many of the ethnic minorities in Sapa and the surrounding areas do not speak Vietnamese as their first language. They communicate using their own languages and dialects, including the ‘Sapa language’. The Sapa language is supposedly the closest relative of the southwestern Thai languages, and is just one of the many indigenous languages which can be found in different regions throughout Vietnam.

With the temperature ranging from the lowest of -1˚C to the highest of 29˚C, Sapa’s climate is moderate and drizzly in summer while chill and foggy in winter.

March – May: perfect weather – warm and dry – for trekking and outdoors activities

June – September: rainy weather and crowded with Vietnamese tourists

Late – September – mid- December: cool dry weather – perfect for photos and trekking

Mid-December – February: harsh winter but few tourists – perfect for people watching

Keep in mind though that Sapa is famous for going through “four seasons in one day”: chilly mornings, warm days, windy, cool afternoons, and cold nights.

If you come in the springtime, you will witness the mountains waking from their winter sleep. Fields and hills will be green and full of flowers.
