A trip to the Northern highland of Vietnam could not be perfect without a visit to its local markets, typical of which are Bac Ha, Sapa and Dong Van markets, opening every Sunday. They are the places where tourists can find all the best of cuisine and agriculture products. With the exclusiveness of the mountainous border areas, these highland markets will surely amaze you any time of year.

Bac Ha Market

Being listed as one of the ten most attractive markets in the Southeast Asia, the Bac Ha Market is must-visit in the early morning of Sundays, when tourists can see a lot of ethnic women in colorful skirts and carrying their products and cattle to market. Visiting the market, you will fell lost in the colorful picture of the variety of products, from a golden patch of peas to giant cucumbers, fresh green mustard patches and brightly red chilies.

A famous dish that you should not miss when visiting Bac Ha market is “thang co”. It is a kind of hot pot including innards, bones, fat and meat from a cow, buffalo or horse. Moreover, you can also try some wine made from the fermentation of a local leaf named “hong my”, together with a special dish of bean soup served with corn flour.

Walking to the end of the market, tourists will be impressed by a group of ethnic men playing trumpet made from bronze and dry paddy plant, called “pile”; as well as various booths of pork vendors and those selling local rice and corn cakes.

Dong Van Market

The market is frequently organized at the center of an ancient town up on Dong Van Plateau on Sundays. It is where locals come to exchange their products that they grow and produce at home. It may seem like a short distance, but the trek is not easy; the rough terrain and unpredictable weather present some difficulties. Tourists who are fit and have mountain climbing experience will enjoy this attraction the most, as the peak is accessible all year round. Technical climbing skills are not necessary, but endurance is a must.

Sapa’s picturesque setting

The town of Sapa has a picture-postcard setting, located in a valley with a small lake and surrounded by majestic mountains often enchantingly blanketed in mist. A room with a view is a must here so you can take in the changes to the vistas, especially how the clouds mesmerize with their continual flow into the valley and over the hills. When the clouds and mist decide to clear off, the views of the surrounding mountains are simply jawdropping.

Sapa’s hill tribe culture

There are several minority groups in the Sapa region and we were lucky enough to meet many of them. The most enjoyable experience was walking through Ta Giang Phinh Valley and meeting the Blue Hmong. As the adults worked in the fields, the children played and looked after one another. Unlike a few other minority groups in the area, this region is still completely unchanged by tourism, so it gave us a really authentic insight into the lives of the villagers.

Markets

The local Sapa markets are a feast for the eyes and the taste buds. Fresh produce, just plucked or picked that day, is in abundance while steam rises off giant pots of stock from which vendors ladle out endless bowls of soup. The market is also the place to buy souvenirs, with an array of colorful textiles, costumes and crafts to choose from, often being made right at the stall while the ladies wait for customers. It is one of our favorite markets in Southeast Asia.

The cool morning breeze will make you shivered. Raise the cup of coffee in hand, next to the omelet plate, looking out the window at an umbrella from the hotel with beautiful views. You will experience a gentle Sapa in the morning mist. Wait until sunset, the sun slowly disappeared behind the Hoang Lien Mountains, Sapa is tinted with the color purple, there is something romantic and melancholy.

A great place to hike and cycle

Sapa is northern Vietnam’s premier hiking destination and also one of the best places for cycling in the country. Whether you want to wander through the foothills for a few hours, or do some lengthier and more strenuous exploring, you’ll be able to enjoy the views as you travel between the small villages dotting the landscape.

How to get to Sapa from Ha Noi

A train ticket costs from 18 USD/ person/ way and it takes you a whole night with time to wait for transit and it is hard to sleep well on the train. Now the high way is in perfect condition, you just spend 5 hours and half (included 30 minutes rest stop) to Sapa on the most comfortable and modern bus (with English speaking assistant staff, complimentary water, wifi and transport insurance) and pay around 18 USD/ way/ person.

Nature View is a top choice if you want excellent value for your money, and this cafe/restaurant is actually better for an evening coffee (if you do that) because of the splendid mountainous sunset views. There’s a fire inside for colder days if you do not wish to sit on the patio, and the menu serves both, international and regional grub. Nature View has a romantic setting, and is the perfect place to have a quiet evening with your significant other as you dine above the clouds. If you want to spend the whole day here, that’s fine – it’s open 24 hours.

Sapa O’Chau Cafe

This café located on popular Thac Bac street is owned by Sapa O’Chau Travel Social Enterprise, an NGO dedicated to providing education and employment opportunities for minority tribespeople in the region. The smell of coffee is especially inviting on a cold Sapa morning and they have Western breakfast menu items to go with like pancakes and fish and chips. For something more special, try the ginger tea sweetened with Sapa mountain honey – you will find yourself returning here time and time again during your stay.

Le Gecko

This French-owned place is four things – a hotel, a cafe, a restaurant, and at night turns into a bar. There’s a great patio outside with comfortable wooden chairs on which you can enjoy a nice cuppa as you bask in the view of Fansipan mountain, the highest peak of Indochina, right in front of you. They even serve Italy’s favorite coffee in here, Lavazza, and a cup of this goes great with the “nama chocolate,” a favorite among patrons which goes for only 10,000 Vietnamese Dong ($0.44) a piece.

Viet Emotion Restaurant

Viet Emotion is a very cosy and unique venue spanning three floors, each with a terrace, and so is a great place to enjoy the mild Sapa sun outside or stay indoors, under the traditional lanterns by the fireplace on cold mountain nights. There are two computers inside connected to the internet available for use– order yourself a cup of hot ginger and lemongrass tea and catch your family and loved ones up on your latest adventures.

Cong Caphe

Cong Caphe is a popular cafe chain that has been taking Vietnam by storm, with multiple outlets in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and now even Sapa. Decorated in a rustic manner with military-style decor and dim lights that create a mellow ambiance, it is described as “slightly hipster” by locals and even more so by foreigners. Sit inside or outside, depending on the weather, order yourself a hot coffee or an iced coconut coffee (a popular favorite!) and kill a couple of hours here. It’s a great spot to take a break after exploring the town. Do expect a bit of construction going on here and there as the location is relatively new.

Phong Nha is known for its numerous caves and the world’s largest cave system, Hang Son Doong, is located here. Sadly, you probably won’t be exploring that anytime soon as it costs a staggering $3,000 for an excursion here by Oxalis which is the only company allowed to offer expeditions into the cave and area. Plus, not to mention, there’s a two or so year waiting list. Don’t let this dishearten you though as you can opt for Hang En cave, the third largest in the world, or Paradise Cave. The Phong Nha Ke Bang national park is also the largest in Vietnam, and home to the last wild populations of black bears, elephants and tigers in Vietnam, so you may want to curb the backpacker instincts of wanting to wander off alone.

Again, going with an independent local guide can often be the best way to ensure your money is doing the most for your destination’s economy.

When looking for a tour company look for the following to travelling green:

• The company proudly promotes their ethical practices.

• They use green office products.

• You can tangibly see how they contribute to the community.

• They respect the local flora and fauna.

• They take destination-specific social and political issues into account.

While you're on the road

Use public transport, bike or walk

Using public transport or travelling under your own steam can cut your environmental impact, and also allow you to meet locals and experience a culture in a slower, more detailed way. Instead of renting a car, hop on a local bus; take a walking tour or view the countryside by bike.

For long distances consider trains, which allow you to see the country out the windows while meeting locals at your seat, the cafeteria or lounge areas.

Don’t use plastic bottles

A small water filter such as a battery-powered Steripen (steripen.com) easily fits in a daypack or purse and can make tap water safe to drink. You can treat water by the liter if you carry a wide-mouth bottle, or you can dunk the device directly into your glass at restaurants, etc, to zap ice cubes and fruit juices.

This allows you not only to reduce your plastic bottle consumption but also to feel safe drinking a wider variety of local beverages - including ice cold drinks on hot days.

Eat locally sourced food

Support the region's farmers, get a more authentic taste of the cuisine and cut your carbon footprint even more. Look out for restaurants advertising local produce or, if that’s not possible, eat local dishes at mom-and-pop-style places that will most likely use what’s produced nearby. Whatever you do, don’t eat endangered species like turtle or over-harvested shellfish.

Know when, and when not to volunteer

In general, places that involve animal welfare or the environment are the most likely volunteer opportunities to be legitimate. Of course there are all sorts of organizations doing incredible humanitarian work; just be sure to do your homework before donating your time and money.

Do your homework on any tour involving people or animals

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of a close encounter with an indigenous tribe or exotic animals but stop for a minute, think logically and ask questions before you support a business that may be doing more harm than good. Just because an experience is offered, promoted and everyone else is doing it does not mean it’s the ethical choice.

Leave a light footprint

Take simple steps such as not getting your sheets changed daily at your hotel, taking short showers, keeping air-con use to a minimum and turning off lights when you don't need them. Research your destination by internet or ask around to find out if there are water shortages, how energy is produced, and if there are any resource issues to be aware of. And use your eyes.

Seeing the giant, noisy, gas-guzzling generator that produces the electricity on that desert island will make you think about it every time you flick a switch.

Don’t dump your stuff

Many developing countries don’t have the means to dispose of bulky, man-made items like old electronics, polyester clothing or used batteries. If you leave them, they could remain in a landfill or worse for literally hundreds of years after you’re gone. Pack your trash and take it home. The exception is clothing and items that may be of use to local people – these should be donated to local charities or religious organizations so they can reach those most in need.
