The building was designed in a neo-Baroque style by famous Parisian architect Achille-Antoine Hermitte, who also created the original Hong Kong City Hall and the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Guangzhou. It's said that Hermitte aimed to create a monument to honor the world's finest cities. The grand palace reportedly cost over four million Francs, more than a quarter of the colony's public works budget. The February 23, 1884 issue of France's Le Monde illustrée featuring the completed palace. An ariel view of the palace surrounded by its spacious grounds. After the departure of the French in 1954, it became the home of the South Vietnamese President, Ngo Dinh Diem, and was renamed Independence Palace. In 1962, after a bombing that heavily damaged the structure, Mr.Diem commissioned the construction of a new palace. Renowned architect Ngo Viet Thu designed the current building, which was completed in 1966. The new palace’s design transformed from European to modernist architectural styles. The new design is characterized by clean lines, open spaces, and a blend of modern and Vietnamese traditional aesthetics, making it distinct from the original colonial design of the Norodom Palace.Reunification Palace - Ho Chi Minh City's Living LegendThe palace saw history unfold when the Vietnam War ended right at its doorstep. On April 30, 1975, a North Vietnamese tank smashed through its gates, changing everything. Saigon fell, and Vietnam became one country again. The South's president, who had only been in charge for two days, gave up without a fight. He went on the radio and told everyone, "The Saigon government is finished, top to bottom." Just like that, an era ended and a new one began. The fall of Saigon marked the end of the Vietnam War and the beginning of the reunification of Vietnam under communist control. The Reunification Palace, once a symbol of the South Vietnamese government, became a symbol of the country's reunification. It was later renamed the Reunification Palace to reflect this pivotal moment in history. The Reunification Palace in 1975. Its architecture was heavily influenced by classical European styles, showcasing the intricate and grand details characteristic of colonial architecture. Designed by architect Hermite, the palace was completed in 1873.Norodom Palace - initial construction -  featured a majestic structure with spacious rooms, high vaulted ceilings, and large columns that embodied French architectural elegance. The palace grounds were adorned with sculptures and gardens, creating a luxurious and imposing atmosphere. After reconstruction, the architecture of the new Reunification Palace features clean lines, open spaces, and an abundance of natural light. The design includes large windows, wide balconies, and functional meeting rooms. Ngo Viet Thu skillfully integrated traditional motifs, such as intricate decorative patterns and open, harmonious spaces that blend with the surrounding nature. The layout of the palace, from the overall plan to the individual building layout, is deeply rooted in Eastern philosophy, symbolized through Chinese characters to convey good wishes for the Vietnamese people. The entire floor plan forms the character "Cát" (吉), meaning good fortune and luck. The central area shapes the character "Khẩu" (口), emphasizing education and freedom of speech. The central flagpole within the "Khẩu" character resembles a vertical stroke, creating the character "Trung" (中), reminding of loyalty and faithfulness. Three horizontal strokes are formed by the surrounding verandas, the honorable balcony, and the entrance veranda, creating the character "Tam" (三), symbolizing humanity, intelligence, and martial virtue. Connecting the three horizontal strokes with a vertical line forms the character "Vương" (王), combined with the flag tower above as a dot, creating the character "Chủ" (主), representing national sovereignty. The front facade of the palace, with the entire second and third-floor balconies combined with the entrance veranda and two wooden-clad columns, forms the character "Hưng" (興), symbolizing prosperity. The Reunification Palace is a masterpiece of 1960s architecture, blending modernist design with traditional Vietnamese elements. The palace features a central hall with an impressive dome, five levels of rooms and halls, and lush gardens. Each room, from the Presidential Reception Room to the basement war rooms, offers a glimpse into the political and social history of Vietnam. What to do at Independence PalaceWalk and explore every corners Over 100 rooms, each with its own job, spread throughout the palace. According to ancient records, the location of Turtle Lake was once the Kham Khuyet Gate of the Bat Quai Citadel, built during the reign of Emperor Gia Long. It later was demolished to construct the smaller Phung Citadel.Following the French occupation in 1859, Phung Citadel was leveled, and the entire city, then known as Saigon, was replanned. In 1878, the French built a water tower at this location to supply water to the residents. However, in 1921, the tower was dismantled due to insufficient capacity, and replaced by a monument featuring three bronze French soldiers with a small water fountain, symbolizing their conquest and dominance over Indochina. The Old Water Tower by the French in Saigon was printed on Indochina postcards.Between 1965 and 1967, after the French withdrew from Vietnam, Saigon Turtle Lake we see today was officially constructed based on the design by architect Nguyen Ky. During four years (1970-1974), the place was renovated and five concrete columns were added to enhance its stability. From above, the lake appears like a blooming flower in the clear blue water. The legends of architecture Turtle Lake's unique design isn't just eye-catching – it's steeped in legend and mystery. Due to its rather unusual architecture, Turtle Lake is linked to the urban myth of a geomantic intervention. A legend says that in 1967, the newly-elected president Nguyen Van Thieu of the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam Government), was feeling a bit, well, insecure. So he invited a famous Chinese feng shui master to assess the land at Independence Palace (now known as Reunification Convention Hall). The feng shui master praised the palace for being built on a dragon vein. The dragon's head lay at Independence Palace, but the dragon's tail was thrashing about over at the location of Turtle Lake. Now, a thrashing dragon tail might sound cool, but in feng shui terms, it's bad news for political stability. To secure the presidential position long-term, a large turtle needed to be cast to hold down the dragon's tail.Mr. Thieu and his wife apparently not ones to question mystical advice, jumped into action. They transformed the square into an octagonal water lake, resembling a bagua (a feng shui symbol used for protection). Four spiral walkways lead to the central area, which features a memorial and a bronze turtle carrying a stone stele.Additionally, the central area has a high column with a petal-shaped top. It's not just pretty – it's practical. This column is seen as a large nail driven into the lake to pin down the dragon's tail. Sadly, in early 1976, the stele and the turtle were destroyed in an explosion. Despite the turtle's absence, locals still refer to the lake as Turtle Lake, instead of its official name today.Nowadays, locals and tourists alike gaze at the lake's octagonal shape, trying to spot the hidden yin-yang symbol. And that towering column? Some swear it looks like a sword, still keeping that dragon in check after all these years. What to do at Turtle Lake - Turtle Lake travel guideEnjoy morning coffee Ho Chi Minh City never stops! Together, let's discover with Vietravel, Vietnam's Largest Aviation-Tourism Corporation.Explore tour packages to Hoi An here.I. The best time to travel to Cu Lao Cham - When to visit Cu Lao ChamLocated just off the coast of Hoi An in central Vietnam, Cu Lao Cham is an idyllic island known for its rich biodiversity and beautiful beaches. But when's the perfect time to immerse yourself in this natural wonder? Let's dive into the ultimate Cu Lao Cham travel guide to find the best month for your adventure. The dry season:From March to August, Cu Lao Cham showcases its finest weather. This is the prime time for sightseeing and engaging in various outdoor activities. The island's top attractions, from coral reefs to historical sites, are at their best during this period. However, be prepared for the influx of tourists, as this is also the peak season. The rainy season: Cu Lao Cham experiences heavy rainfall, choppy seas, and occasional storms from September to February. While this may not sound ideal, it offers a unique, quieter experience of the island. The reduced number of visitors means you can enjoy a more intimate connection with the island's nature. Additionally, prices for accommodations and services tend to be lower during this off-peak period. Chance of rain in Hoi An during a year. (Source: Holiday Weather)However,  we strongly advise against traveling to the island during this time. The East Sea region often experiences rain, storms, and colder weather during these months. Traveling to the island will not be possible as boats are prohibited from operating. Even if you manage to board a boat to the island, it would be very dangerous and carry many risks. Moreover, the rainy and cold weather will hinder your journey to the tourist spots on the island. You might also get stuck and be unable to return to the mainland as planned. The transition periods:The months of March and September are particularly special.
