As of 2023, citizens from 25 selected countries can visit Vietnam without needing a visa. All you need is a valid passport with at least two blank pages for stamps. 2. How to Apply for Vietnam

If you're not among the lucky ones benefiting from Vietnam's visa exemptions, there's no need to fret. This guide presents you with three accessible and efficient avenues to secure your Vietnam visa. 

2.1. Vietnam E-visa

Starting from August 15, 2023, Vietnam has introduced an innovative electronic visa (e-visa) system applicable to individuals of all nationalities.

Vietnam's e-Visa process is a simple and user-friendly way to get a visa online. The whole process, from applying and paying to receiving the visa, happens online and takes just three business days.

a. Vietnam e-Visa Requirements:

• A passport with six (6) months of validity
• A photo in .jpg format of your full passport data page
• A passport photo in .jpg format (4x6, white background, without glasses)
• A valid international credit or debit card
• An email address for support purposes
• A temporary address in Vietnam
• Your entry and exit dates and entry and exit points/airports

b. How to Apply for Vietnam’s e-Visa

Step 1: Access the Official E-Visa Portals

Visit either of these official e-visa portals to initiate the application:

Vietnam Immigration Department's portal

Ministry of Public Security's National Public Service Portal

Step 2: Provide Trip Details

Enter your intended entry date, stay duration, chosen entry and exit points, and temporary address in Vietnam.

Step 3: Choose Visa Type

Select a single-entry or multiple-entry visa within the application form.

Step 4: Upload Passport Information

Upload images of your passport data page and passport photo

Step 5: Submit the Application

After completing the form and uploading documents, submit the application.

Step 6: Pay the Visa Fee

Once submitted, you'll receive an electronic dossier code. Pay the $25 fee for a single-entry visa.

Step 7: Track Application Status

Monitor progress using the provided code on the e-visa portal.

Step 8: Await Visa Issuance

Expect the e-visa in around three working days. After three days, you may search for your visa at this link.

Step 9: Entry Through Designated Checkpoints

2.2 Visa on Arrival / at Vietnam Diplomatic Missions with Approved Visa Letter

An Approval Letter is a letter issued by Vietnam Immigration Department that allows you to enter and exit Vietnam for a given time period (1 month or 3 months – single/multiple entries). With the approval letter, you can pick up your visa upon arrival at one of eight international airports in Vietnam (Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hai Phong, Khanh Hoa, Can Tho, Dalat, and Phu Quoc) or at the Vietnam Embassy/Consulate in your country.

If you book tours with Vietravel, we will support you get this Approval Letter with a service fee. In case your application is denied by Vietnam Immigration Department, we will refund this service fee. Processing time: 7 working days or more depending on your nationality.

Please note: The Embassy reserves the right to request further information and documentation from applicants and to deny approval for any visa application without necessarily providing an explanation for visa denial.

• For Visa On Arrival: At the airport, the corresponding authorities will verify the details on the approval letter based on your passport and travel documents for you to get Visa Stamped (fee: $25) on your passport.
• For getting Visa at Vietnam Embassy: At a Vietnam Embassy/Consulate, the visa procedure will take around 7 days to process. Visa fees will depend on the type of visa for which you are applying. Travelers can get their visas processed at any Vietnam Diplomatic in any country to enter Vietnam for tourism.

Vietnam Approval Visa Letter

To get a Vietnam visa on arrival at Vietnam Diplomatic or the airport, travelers will need to obtain a visa approval letter beforehand, then get on the flight to Vietnam and get a visa stamped upon landing at Vietnam airport.

• Prepare documents before getting a visa at the airport as below
• Original passport (being valid for at least 6 months following your date of entry and having at least 2 blank pages)- The visa approval letter (printed on paper already)
• The Vietnamese visa Application Form (Form N1 – also known as the entry and exit form) with completed information and attached photo already.
• You can find and get it at Immigration Office at the airport, this form is attached together with the visa approval letter, find the guide to complete Form N1.

Vietnam visa photo at the airport, the photo size, and requirements:

• The 2 photos size should be 4 x 6 cm (standard Vietnam photography size) or 2 x 2 inches.
• The photos should be identical, taken within the past 06 months.
• The photos must be in color and printed on bond paper or professional photo paper.
• They must be full face, front view with a solid, plain bright background.
• A hat or headgear must be kept out unless it must be worn for religious purposes.
• The outfit with the exception of religious attire should not be worn.
• Dark glasses or nonprescription glasses with tinted lenses are not acceptable unless required for medical reasons. In some exceptional cases, consistent objects like prescription glasses, a hearing device, a wig, or similar items are still accepted.No smile. Just keep a neutral expression.

Stamping fee (25$/person using a 1 or 3-month single entry visa, and 50$/person using a 1 or 3-month multiple entry visa)

Old Town

The Old Town of Hoi An is a remarkably well-preserved South-East Asian trading port dating from the 15th to the 19th century. Many of the historic buildings are built in a traditional Chinese style, and the roads are narrow and winding. Classical music is piped into the Old Town, and a single ticket allows you entrance into the main attractions. Highlights of the Old Town Include the Japanese Covered Bridge, the three so-called Old Houses, and the Quan Cong Temple. There are several museums in the Old Town, but you may want to skip them in favor of watching the incredible folk music performances held several times each day at the Hoi An Handicraft Workshop.

The Japanese Bridge

These days, the Japanese Bridge has become a Hoi An's signature, but turn back into the 17th century, when the bridge was built, it simply serves as a way for the Japanese community who lived on the other side of the stream to reach the Chinese quarter. The Japanese Bridge has been restored many times over the years but has mostly stayed true to the original whose simple design stands in contrast to the generously embellished Chinese temples nearby.

Old House of Tan Ky

Located at 101 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, in the Old Quarter of Hoi An Ancient Town, Tan Ky Old house is an almost perfect example of an 18th merchant’s residence in this major commercial port town. The name Tan Ky, meaning “Progress Shop”, was given to the house by the second generation to express the owner’s wish for a prosperous business. In spite of the decline in business of the town and the huge devastation of annual floods, seven generations of the family have continuously strived to keep the house in good condition. Though it’s not the oldest, Tan Ky is the most well-preserved in Hoi An.

Hoi An Night Market

There is no shortage of shopping opportunities in the city, but one of the most interesting is found at the Hoi An Night Market. The market is located on Nguyen Hoang Street, just opposite the Japanese Covered Bridge. The market opens around five each evening when more than 500 vendors open up their stalls to sell everything from souvenirs to clothing to fresh food. Perhaps the most-spotted item for sale is the paper lantern, which glows beautifully after nightfall. You can buy a colorful lantern to cast a glow as you shop, or you can take it home as a way to remember the colors, vibrancy, and excitement of the Hoi An Night Market.

Phuc Kien Assembly Hall

Located at the same street as Quang Trieu, Phuc Kien Fujian Assembly Hall is the largest and most famous of the assembly halls in Hoi An’s Ancient Town. Originally the site of a Vietnamese pagoda dedicated to Buddha, the land was later sold in the mid-1700s to the largest group of Chinese traders in Hoi An, the Fujian, and Phuc Kien Fujian Assembly Hall was built in its place. Phuc Kien honors three goddesses, all with extraordinary talents in relation to the sea, from being able to spot ships from thousands of miles away to protect fishermen out at sea.

Quan Cong Temple - Quan Am Pagoda

Connected and thus considered a single site as far as ticket stubs go, Quan Cong Temple and Quan Am Pagoda are both relatively small places of worship, especially in comparison to the size of Hoi An’s assembly halls. Quan Cong Temple was built in 1653 in honor of Quan Cong, a prominent Chinese general known for his courage, loyalty, and integrity. His likeness has been preserved in statue-form, and if you make an offering to him, the same person who takes your ticket will ring a bronze bell for you. The adjoining Quan Am Pagoda, dedicated to the Chinese goddess of mercy and compassion, can be accessed by following the passage behind the temple.

An Bang Beach

One of the busiest beaches in all of Vietnam is An Bang Beach. The most popular area for diving in Vietnam is in Nha Trang. Why I hear you say? It’s simple. Nha Trang Bay boasts 12,000 hectares of reef-filled waters known as the Hon Mun Marine Protected Area. The most popular diving sites in Da Nang are found around Son Tra Peninsula, 7 miles (12 kilometres) north, and the best time for diving here is between February to September. It is best to avoid other months due to rough waters and poor visibility.

Whale Island

Just a 90-minute drive north of Nha Trang, you’ll find the idyllic Whale Island nestled in Van Phong Bay. The presence of a Japanese bridge in a Chinese-influenced Vietnamese town is no accident. Thanks to its close proximity to the South China Sea, Hoi An was an important trading port for Chinese, Dutch, Indian, and Japanese merchants up until the 17th century. The Japanese traders were the dominant force at the time; many of the old houses in Hoi An reflect their influence. Today, the Hoi An Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, drawing thousands of tourists who come to step back in time for a brief visit.

The Hoi An Japanese Bridge remains a symbol of the significant impact that the Japanese had in the region at that time. The bridge was originally constructed to connect the Japanese community with the Chinese quarter - separated by a small stream of water - as a symbolic gesture of peace. Although his work has been appreciated for centuries, the builder of the bridge still remains anonymous.

Roughly 40 years after the Hoi An Japanese Bridge was constructed, the Tokugawa Shogunate demanded that its overseas citizens – mostly traders sailing around the region – to go home, officially closing Japan to the rest of the world.

Shrines in the Japanese Bridge

Some local guides claim that construction of the Japanese bridge began in the year of the dog and was completed in the year of the monkey. Others say the two animals were chosen to guard the bridge because many Japanese emperors were born either in the year of the dog or monkey - lending them sacred significance.

Renovation of the Japanese Bridge

The Japanese bridge has been renovated a total of seven times over the centuries. The wooden sign at the entrance of the bridge was hung in the early 1700s, changing the name from "Japanese Covered Bridge" to "Bridge for Travelers from Afar". Previously, the bridge had changed names several times, from Lai Vien Kieu "Pagoda in Japan"; to Chua Cau "Covered Bridge"; to Cau Nhat Ban "Japanese Bridge".

During their colonial hegemony, the French removed thresholds and leveled the road across the bridge to support motorized vehicles during their colonization. The changes were later undone and the bridge pedestrianized again during major restoration in 1986.

As of 2016, an eighth renovation is urgently needed. The river water has eroded the bridge support's structural integrity, and the whole structure's location in the most flood-prone area of Hoi An Old Town makes it particularly vulnerable in typhoon season.“The foundations can still support the bridge and visitors under good weather,” the reports conclude. “However, many parts have cracks and decayed and may not be reliable under more extreme weather conditions.” The authorities plan to dismantle the Japanese Bridge for restoration and repair purposes before the structure completely breaks down in the next flood.

Visiting the Hoi An Japanese Bridge
