U.S. magazine Travel+Leisure has named Phu Quoc Island in a list of 23 best destinations to visit this year, calling it "one of the new stars of Vietnam's tourism."

"Vietnam's largest island Phu Quoc is an enchanting place of white sand beaches, emerald forests dotted with waterfalls, rock pools, and caves," it said.

It advised tourists to buy fish sauce at traditional fishing villages like Ham Ninh, around 14 kilometers from the downtown area, where fresh seafood is also available daily.

Phu Quoc has aviation connectivity with regional tourist destinations like India, making the island one of the new stars of Vietnam's tourism, it said.

Last year low-cost airline Vietjet began direct services from Phu Quoc to the Indian cities of New Delhi and Mumbai.

Well known for its long, sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and dense forests, Phu Quoc has become a popular holiday destination for both domestic and international tourists.

The list includes other Asian tourist hotspots like Khao Lak in Thailand, Sentosa in Singapore, Raja Ampat in Indonesia, and Fukuoka in Japan.

1. Walking/ Bicycle

Discovering Phu Quoc on foot or by bike is a delightful and immersive experience, allowing you to soak in its intact beauty, vibrant markets, and friendly locals. Whether strolling along sun-kissed beaches, exploring lush trails, or meandering through charming fishing villages, you'll have the freedom to sightseeing at your own pace, unlocking the island's treasures along the way.

2. Motorbike

Rev up your exploration by renting a motorbike: Motorbikes are readily available for rent on Tran Hung Dao Street near the Long Beach resorts, and some hotels also offer bike rentals. The average daily rental cost is around $10, but don't be afraid to haggle for a better deal. Before you hit the road, carefully inspect the motorbike's condition and check the fuel level. Keep in mind that rental agreements are often verbal and do not include insurance or assistance in case of accidents or mechanical issues. Therefore, it's essential to exercise caution and take full responsibility for your rental.

3. Boat

Take to the water for an exclusive mode of transportation to explore Phu Quoc's surrounding islands and indulge in some fishing adventures. Hiring a boat for a group of 1-4 people is a reasonably priced option for embarking on a sea fishing excursion. The boat trip will provide you with memorable experiences and stunning views from a different perspective.

4. Taxis

If you prefer the comfort and convenience of a taxi, Phu Quoc has several metered taxi companies, including Mai Linh and SASCO, that service most of the main hotels and resorts. When traveling to other parts of the island, negotiate a fixed price with the driver instead of relying on the meter to avoid any surprises. This way, you can enjoy a comfortable ride without breaking the bank.

Overall, use the helpful advice in our Phu Quoc travel guide to get around this poetic land. Find nature's hidden treasures and move through its hills like a seasoned traveler.

Phu Quoc Islands emerge as a new global hotspot

With its enchanting natural beauty, iconic architecture, and top-notch travel experiences, Phu Quoc Island has become a must-visit destination for travelers across the globe. The island has come a long way from being an unknown gem to becoming one of the world's most sought-after destinations, surpassing other well-known tourist hotspots.

In 2021, Phu Quoc's splendor was recognized when it was included in Time magazine's list of the 100 greatest islands in the world. The island's charm and allure were further highlighted in November 2022, when it bagged the coveted World Travel Award for "The World's Leading Nature Island Destination," beating out six other renowned islands like Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Isle of Skye in Scotland, Lofoten in Norway, Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean, and Zanzibar in Tanzania.

international border gates within the territory of Vietnam, Kien Giang Newspaper reported. The proposal aims to make Phu Quoc an even more accessible and attractive destination for travelers worldwide.

Phu Quoc beach is among Asia's best for a summer getaway

Phu Quoc beach is among Asia's best for a summer getaway

Southeast Asian travel site, Tripzilla, has recently released its list of the 15 best beaches for a summer vacation in Asia, and Sao Beach on the southern island of Phu Quoc has made the cut.

Located approximately 25 km from downtown Phu Quoc, Sao Beach stretches for 7 km along the island's southern tip, boasting pristine white sands and crystal-clear waters.

Despite its popularity during peak season, visitors can still find quiet spots to relax at the south and north ends of the beach. The central area of the beach is particularly popular among tourists, with many water sports facilities and eateries available.

According to Tripzilla, the best time to visit the beach is between November and March, when temperatures are at their most comfortable, ranging from 25 to 28 degrees Celsius.

Sao Beach derives its name from the Vietnamese word for "star". Local legends suggest that the beach got its name from the thousands of starfish that used to appear on the white sands every sunset. While you may not see quite as many of them these days, there's no denying the enduring allure of Sao Beach.

Phu Quoc, which is also known as the "pearl island", gained international attention following the opening of its international airport in 2012 and its introduction of a 30-day visa-free policy for foreign visitors in 2014.
