People - Hoi An

The name Hoi An means peaceful meeting place and it still feels that way all these many hundreds of years after the Cham people, of the former Kingdom of Champa, first began trading there in the seventh century. Today's 120,000 or so residents are generally more laid back and go to bed earlier than those of Vietnam's much larger centers as Ha Noi or Ho Chi Minh City.

The Food

You take a cooking class in Hoi An because you have tried the food. While Vietnam as a whole is known for its delicious cuisine, Hoi An specifically has some of the best. With local dishes (Cao Lau and Mi Quang) that are strictly made within the region, you will fall in love with Hoi An’s food as quickly as you did with the old town.

Unlike Vietnam's big cities, where scooters and cars rule, Hoi An is still into cycling. Motorbike and car is prohibited in Old Town from 9am-11am and 3pm-9:30pm, making these more relaxing times to get around by bicycle. The city streets are also quiet in the late evenings.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, Hoi An was a busy trading center. Nowadays, this historic quarter is a mysterious, enchanting streetscape of Japanese, Vietnamese and Chinese houses. The streets in Hoi An are uniformly pained mango-yellow. Every night, there are colored, traditional lanterns hung on the streets. The architecture, historic sites, and river life remain completely unscathed.

When thinking about Vietnam, the countryside, in general, and countryside in Hoi An, in particular, is what you are picturing. Swaying bamboo, vast green rice paddies, farmers donning iconic conical hats, coconut trees, water buffalos trotting along the small road and peaceful riverside villages looking like they have never heard about tourism,  which is what make Hoi An so memorable and impressive in the eyes of Western tourists.

The Nightly Events

Music and dance performances often take place along the riverfront in the evenings, you will also see people releasing floating candles with well wishes into the Thu Bon River. If you are up for a little nighttime shopping, you can cross the bridge over to An Hoi where a fun night market sets up selling everything from silk lanterns to beaded necklaces.
