Nestled in the southern highlands of Vietnam, Da Lat sits 4,900 feet above sea level and provides a refreshing respite for anyone looking to escape the tropical heat of the South. Da Lat is also the agricultural powerhouse of Vietnam and it’s definitely worth a trip to see how inhabitants have devised high-tech farming systems to feed fresh fruits and vegetables to millions of Vietnamese.

The city of eternal spring

This city is the one place in Vietnam where you can experience all seasons in one day. Spring in the morning, summer at midday, autumn in the evening, and winter at night. That being said, make sure to bring warm sweaters and pants if you plan on visiting during the Southern “winter” months of November- February.

Owing to its romantic sights (such as beautiful Xuan Huong lake) and cuddle-worthy climate, Da Lat has also made a name for itself as the honeymoon capital of Vietnam. It is also home to a mini replica of the Eiffel Tower, earning it the nickname “Le Petit Paris”.

Vietnam’s breadbasket

Da lat was established in the late 19th century by French colonialists. It began as a research station for agriculture and served as a place to catch some rest and relaxation throughout the 20th century, even during the Vietnam War. Now, Da Lat produces a staggering amount of fresh produce for the entire country. Lettuce, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, potatoes, pepper, strawberries, and especially coffee are significant sources of income for the hundreds of farmers living there. The French introduced coffee cultivation to the area around the same time Da Lat was established. The coffee industry was slow to recover after the war but is now responsible for delivering the thick, strong Vietnamese coffee millions of people savour every day.

An agricultural revolution

In the past decade, Da Lat farmers have revolutionised their farming industry. Back-breaking field work has given way to unique, high-tech cultivation systems. Plant tissue cultivation is becoming the norm, and Da Lat farmers have spent billions of Vietnamese dong to build laboratories that allow for faster, better, and way easier ways of growing produce. Bacteria-resistant plants are now grown in sterilised glasshouses, generating higher yields of better quality than their field-grown counterparts.

One such popular technology is called hydroponic farming, and it completely eliminates the need for soil. Instead, shielded from the elements in modern glasshouses, plants are grown in horizontal stacks of beds that are showered with nutrient-dense water. This method also renders fertilizers and pesticides unnecessary. On average, farmers are now working less and earning more by investing in such agricultural technology.

The cable car ride from/to Truc Lam Monastery Complex is a popular way to see Dalat from above. Along the two and a half kilometre ride, you can enjoy the attractive scenery such as pine tree-covered hills, rivers, rice plantations and the sea. Truc Lam Monastery Complex is rather new and already famous for its beautiful pagoda. Avoid national and school holidays as well as weekends if you want to avoid the crowds. Elephant and Ostriches Ride 

Prenn Waterfall is not just another pretty site to visit in Dalat. It offers many interesting activities including elephant and ostrich rides. The humble elephant will take you through unspoiled nature such as small creeks, lakes and green forests. For those who really want to try something different, here is your chance. Ostriches might not be a common transport option but here in Dalat you can ride on one. The idea of climbing up on an ostrich’s back can be quite a challenge but once you manage to get up there and start the ride it is one of the most interesting experiences as these well-trained animals are used to human and are amazingly friendly. 

Hiking 

Leisurely nature walks along forest trails (or many more adventurer treks for the experience hikers) are another way to discover this area’s beauty. Dalat is full of many natural sights where interesting animals and birds can be found. Some treks may lead you to caves, waterfalls, lakes, volcanic peaks, minority villages, suspension bridges and farmlands too. Lang Bian Mountain (about 12km north of downtown Dalat) is one of the most popular locations for a day or a half-day out hiking. It has five peaks that range from 2100m to 2400m in altitude. Other hot locations for hiking include Ba Be Lake National Park, Pongour Falls and the Lake of Sorrows. 

Horseback Riding 

Another way to enjoy Dalat’s beautiful countryside is on horseback. Visitors can hire horses by the hour and for about twice the amount they can also take a horse-drawn carriage for a pleasure ride around Dalat Flower Garden and the Lake of Sorrow too.

Góc Hà Thành serves authentic Vietnamese dishes in a small and intimate space with wooden walls and furniture, made to look like a countryside home. The menu is one of the best in town, and none of the dishes can be singled out as lacking. Order a large spread of dishes and eat family style. We recommend the coconut curry chicken, stir-fried morning glory, fresh spring rolls, and the caramelised fish in clay pot. To go with it, get some rice wine, which is also home-made and notoriously strong (yet goes down quite smoothly). If you’re going to drink a bunch, make sure to call a Grab instead of driving yourself.

Artist Alley is one of the most popular eateries in Da Lat. With an affordable menu that focuses on French and Vietnamese cuisine, you’ll be enjoying your meal in a cosy atmosphere, with a live guitar being gently strummed in the background. Living up to its name, there are unique paintings and scultpures scattered around the venue (and it is, non-surprisingly, located down a quiet alley). Tables are candlelit come evening, making it a good option to take your amour on a romantic date – the vibes here seem a world away from the busy streets of Dalat.

K'BE Wood Fired Pizza and BBQ

In an often cold and rainy city like Da Lat, sometimes a hot cheesy wood-fired pizza is just what you need. K’BE Wood Fired Pizza and BBQ is an expat-owned restaurant near Langbiang Mountain, where you can enjoy some authentic Western cuisine – often a welcome change from all the rice and noodles. All pizzas listed on the menu are equally delicious, and ingredients are sourced directly from farmers of the K’Ho ethnic minority. Try the margherita for 125,000 VND ($5.35 USD), the slow-cooked BBQ pork ribs for 250,000 VND/kg, and the mashed potatoes that come at 75,000 VND. You’ll leave feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.

Le Rabelais

Le Rabelais at the Da Lat Palace Hotel (built in 1922) is another luxurious French restaurant that occupies the grandest of dining rooms and a spectacular terrace looking down on the lakeshore. It’s the perfect choice for a night of celebration, where you will be surrounded by glamorous interiors and attentive staff who will treat you like royalty. Recommended dishes include steamed lobster in chilli orange sauce and grilled shrimp with creamy fresh leek and vanilla sauce. Set dinner menus are priced from 1,300,000 VND ($56 USD), which isn’t too bad for such a fancy place. Dress well.

Restaurant Ichi

For a little taste of Japan, head over to Restaurant Ichi. The menu is small, giving chefs the breathing space to prepare food to perfection. Make sure to order a generous selection of dishes such as the edamame, katsudon and the spicy tuna rolls. Despite being a little on the pricey side, it’s worth the splurge. Reservations are advised as the place can get quite full. Choose to sit downstairs – you’ll have front row seats to watch the chefs in action.

Langbiang peak

Langbiang is one of the three highest peaks of the Southern of Vietnam. This is a great place for a Chinese classic that is popular all over Vietnam. Mi hoanh thanh (wonton noodle soup) is an egg noodle soup with pork dumplings, ground pork and pork slices in a sweet, clear broth. This is another hearty soup for those cold, grey Dalat days. Tiem Mi Tau Cao is a small, busy place that is open to the street. It is open all day but gets particularly busy in the mornings when locals dressed in heavy coats huddle over their steaming bowls for warmth. The price for a bowl of soup is 40,000VNĐ ($2).

Goc Ha Thanh

Goc Ha Thanh serves authentic Vietnamese dishes in a small and intimate space with wooden walls and furniture, made to look like a countryside home. The menu is one of the best in town, and none of the dishes can be singled out as lacking. Order a large spread of dishes and eat family style. If you are going to drink a bunch, make sure to call a Grab instead of driving yourself.

Quan Hoa Sua

This place serves a variety of warming drinks for those cold Da Lat nights such as hot soy milk, green bean ‘brew’, and peanut ‘coco’. The latter is a bit like drinking smooth peanut butter but without the sweetness. There is a selection of little pastries to dunk in your hot drink. Quan Hoa Sua is not much more than a hole-in-the-wall but there is usually a good crowd here sitting on the tiny plastic stools on the pavement from sunset. Drinks and pastries are very cheap: 5,000VNĐ ($0.25).

Xuan Huong Lake

Xuan Huong Lake is truly the heart of Da Lat. Besides being the main recreational area for the residents, it also serves as the town’s night kitchen. Many street vendors set up their shops along the banks of the lake in the evening and stay open until about 22:00 or so. Certain streets around the lake are turned into pedestrian areas over the weekend which makes it so much easier to stroll around and enjoy the food and atmosphere.Tourists can even do some shopping for inexpensive souvenirs at the same time too. Among the local, their favourite ones are beef rice noodles, BBQ squid, boiled shellfish, hot soya drinks, all cheap and delicious. A must-try is local coffee served in a stainless steel container that acts like a filter.
