UNESCO Geopark Dong Van Plateau to implement overnight stay fees for tourists

The scenic Dong Van Karst plateau, recognized as a UNESCO global geopark, will soon introduce an overnight stay fee for visitors, according to authorities in Ha Giang province. Hoang Xuan Don, the head of the Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark management, revealed that the province is finalizing a plan to collect a fee of VND30,000 ($1.27) per night for adults and VND15,000 for children. The funds generated from this fee will be utilized to enhance infrastructure and support conservation efforts in the geopark.

Spanning across 2,356 square kilometers in the districts of Quang Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van, and Meo Vac, the geopark boasts breathtaking limestone formations, rugged cliffs, and mesmerizing karst peaks. Within its borders, visitors can explore renowned attractions like the Lung Cu Flag Tower, Dong Van ancient town, and the Ma Pi Leng mountain pass.

Ha Giang has long been a favorite destination among adventurous Western backpackers who are eager to embrace the challenges of the elements and conquer the winding roads along the 350-kilometer-long loop. This iconic route typically takes three to five days to complete, depending on weather conditions. Earlier this year, Ha Giang was recognized by The New York Times as one of the 52 best places to visit in 2023, further elevating its appeal among global travelers.

The introduction of overnight stay fees aims to generate additional resources for improving infrastructure and supporting the conservation of Dong Van Plateau's unique natural heritage. By implementing these fees, the authorities are taking proactive steps to ensure the sustainability of the geopark and enhance the overall experience for visitors.

As Dong Van Plateau continues to captivate travelers with its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, the introduction of overnight stay fees demonstrates a commitment to preserving its beauty for future generations. This initiative highlights the province's dedication to sustainable tourism and

serves as a model for responsible tourism management in Vietnam's geoparks.
