Thailand Suvarnabhumi Airport introduced automated passport checks for outbound passengers

On December 15, Thailand is set to implement automated passport check channels for outbound foreign passengers at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok. The move aims to alleviate congestion at the country's busiest airport.

Pol Gen Choengron Rimphadee, the commander of Immigration Police Division 2 for international airports, revealed that these automatic channels are designed for passengers carrying e-passports and comply with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.

Suvarnabhumi Airport — Suvarnabhumi Airport combines modern design elements with distinctive Thai features.

While foreigners with ordinary passports and certain individuals (children, disabled travelers) holding e-passports will still use traditional channels, the automated process promises a quicker experience. Despite the speed, the machines remain vigilant, detecting individuals with arrest warrants, travel bans, or visa overstays.

Suvarnabhumi Airport initially introduced 16 automated channels for passport checks in 2012, catering exclusively to Thai nationals. Each automated scan takes approximately 20 seconds, providing a faster alternative to the 45-second process with manned immigration officers. Suvarnabhumi Airport currently manages 50,000-60,000 outbound passengers daily.
