Phuket, Thailand — In a groundbreaking move to enhance safety and health measures for tourists, Thailand is set to kick off the "Safety Phuket Island Sandbox" initiative starting November 26. The program, introduced as part of a national pilot scheme, will take place at Pa Tong beach and Walking Street in Muang district.
The primary objective of the initiative is to instill confidence in tourists regarding the quality of medical care provided by local authorities, ultimately aiming to revitalize tourism and stimulate the local economy.
Among the key services offered is a dedicated "sky doctor" medical response team, ensuring immediate medical attention when needed. Additionally, establishments promoting health and safety will be recognized with Green Health certificates. The campaign will focus on elevating hospital facilities, enhancing medical care quality, and prioritizing food safety, especially for dishes prepared by street food vendors.

Dr. Thanit Sermkaew, the medical supervisor of Health Service Provider Board Office 11 overseeing Phuket, outlined the 100-day health and safety campaign's key components. These include the deployment of emergency medical units at Pa Tong beach, initiatives for rabies protection, free influenza vaccination for 100,000 tourism workers, Street Food Good Health certification, the establishment of a Travel Medicine Center, and the introduction of a digital disease report platform.
The program, initially launching in Phuket, is slated to expand to 12 other provinces, including Bangkok, Nan, Sukhothai, Kamphaeng Phet, Ayutthaya, Phetchaburi, Rayong, Kalasin, Udon Thani, Nakhon Ratchasima, Trang, and Ubon Ratchathani. With a comprehensive approach to health and safety, Thailand aims to set new benchmarks in the global tourism landscape.
