III. The history – Do Phu Coffee travel guide

Before 1975, the shop, then called Do Phu Cafe, served as a covert base for the People's Army under the supervision of Tran Van Lai. Although the house was ostensibly given to Do Mien and his wife, Su, to sell broken rice and coffee, it was actually used to store and transfer confidential letters and documents to the war zone.

Tran Vu Binh, Lai's son and the current owner of the café, recounted its origins. Before starting the business, Su and her husband went on an undercover intelligence mission to Phnom Penh, Cambodia. After spending a few years there, they returned to Vietnam and began selling broken rice. The shop catered to workers and gradually gained popularity among locals, including many Korean soldiers involved in the war. Due to its proximity to the house of Ngo Quang Truong, an officer of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam, the couple had to exercise extreme caution.

The café's menu includes a unique blend of Vietnamese broken rice and kimchi, a traditional Korean fermented vegetable dish. The original broken rice serving features grilled ribs, roasted pork skin, fried eggs, pickled vegetables, and sweet southern-style chili garlic fish sauce.

Today, when visiting the Do Phu cafe - Dai Han broken rice restaurant, which some still refer to as "Biet Dong coffee," tourists will immediately see the traces of a revolutionary era of secret activities that once took place in the heart of the Saigon urban area.

IV. Vintage Architecture - What to do in Ho Chi Minh City

Stepping into Do Phu Coffee is like stepping back in time. The architecture of this historic establishment is a blend of traditional Vietnamese design and subtle colonial influences, creating a unique and nostalgic atmosphere that captivates visitors.

1. Historical Roots

The building that houses Do Phu Coffee dates back to the early 20th century, reflecting the architectural styles of that era. Originally constructed as a residential home, its design features a harmonious blend of Vietnamese and French colonial elements. The use of wood and natural materials, combined with intricate detailing, showcases the craftsmanship of the period.

2. Traditional Vietnamese Design

The structure of Đỗ Phủ Coffee embraces traditional Vietnamese architectural principles. The use of wooden beams, tiled roofs, and open courtyards provides a sense of space and natural ventilation, essential for the tropical climate of Ho Chi Minh City. The layout encourages a flow of air and light, creating a cool and inviting environment for guests.

3. Colonial Influences

The French colonial influence is evident in the building's facade and interior design. High ceilings, large windows, and ornate ironwork reflect the aesthetic preferences of the colonial period. These elements are seamlessly integrated with Vietnamese design, resulting in a unique architectural fusion that tells the story of the city's historical and cultural evolution.

4. Preservation and Restoration

Efforts have been made to preserve the original features of the building while making necessary restorations to ensure its structural integrity. The worn wooden floors, aged brick walls, and vintage furnishings add to the charm and authenticity of the space. Each corner of the café has been carefully restored to maintain its historical significance and provide visitors with an immersive experience.

5. Artistic Details

Throughout Do Phu Coffee, visitors can find artistic touches that enhance its cultural richness. Hand-painted murals, traditional Vietnamese artwork, and historical photographs adorn the walls, each piece narrating a part of the café's storied past. These artistic details not only beautify the space but also serve as a visual journey through Vietnam's history.
