1. Vietnam Visa Types


1.1. Visa-Free:


You can arrive in Vietnam which does not require you to obtain a visa with your passport. This means that you don't need to go to the consulate, gather together your documents or pay any fee to get into Vietnam.


Visitors from the following countries may enter visa-free, and stay for the indicated number of days. The full list of countries with visa exemptions is below.

1.2. Visa on Arrival:


To get a Vietnam Visa on Arrival at the airport, travelers will need to obtain an Approval Letter beforehand, then get on the flight to Vietnam and get a visa stamped upon landing at a Vietnam airport ($25 Stamped fee).

1.3. E-Visas:


In addition to visas on arrival and Visa-Free, Vietnam's e-Visa is also one of the visa types offered by the Vietnam Immigration Department to foreigners entering the country.

  • The e-Visa is valid for 30 days and single entry only. 
  • The e-Visa costs 25 USD for card payments. 
  • This process takes three full working days.

As of July 2020, Vietnam's e-Visa is available to nationals of 80 following countries: Andorra, Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Brunei Darussalam, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China (including Hong Kong SAR and Macau SAR passport holders, not applicable to Chinese e-passport holders), Colombia, Croatia, Cuba, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Fiji, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, Marshall Islands, Mexico, Micronesia, Moldova, Monaco, Mongolia, Montenegro, Myanmar, Nauru, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Palau, Panama, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Republic of Korea, Romania, Russia, Salomons Islands, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Timor Leste, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, United States of America, Uruguay, Vanuatu, Venezuela, and Western Samoa.

1.4. Visa at the Embassy of Vietnam


If your country is not in the above cases then you are in this category.


A visa application submitted to the Vietnamese Mission abroad shall include the following documents:

  • 01 Application form (in provided format) with an attached photo.
  • Original Passport or passport substitute;
  • Visa approval document issued by the Immigration Department. If you book tours with Vietravel, we will support you get this Approval Letter with a service fee. In case your application is denied by Vietnam Immigration Department, we will refund this service fee. Processing time: 7 working days or more depending on your nationality.

Within 03 working days from the day Viet Nam’s mission abroad receives valid and completed visa applications, and visa approval is granted by the Immigration Department, you can get your visa at Vietnam Embassy. Visa fees will depend on the type of visa for which you are applying.


Please note: The Embassy reserves the right to request further information and documentation from applicants and to deny approval for any visa application without necessarily providing an explanation for visa denial.


2. Vietnam e-Visa Requirements

  • A passport with six (6) months of validity
  • A photo in .jpg format of your full passport data page
  • A passport photo in .jpg format (4x6, white background, without glasses)
  • A valid international credit or debit card
  • An email address for support purposes
  • A temporary address within Vietnam
  • Your entry and exit dates and entry and exit points/airports

3. A step-by-step guide to applying for Vietnam’s e-Visa

You can apply for an e-visa here. It is available both in English and Vietnamese so before moving on, choose the English language in the top right corner. After that, choose the “For Foreigners" section to go to the next page.


Step 2: Fill out the information


On this page, you can see a description of all the steps to apply for an e-visa in Vietnam. At the bottom of the page, check the box "Confirmation of reading carefully instructions and having completed application" and click Next to continue the process.

In the first section Foreigner’s images, you are required to upload a portrait and passport data page image as shown in the example. Next, fill out the required information in the Personal Information section which includes:

  • Full name (Use international character as in ICAO line)
  • Sex
  • Date of birth
  • Religion
  • Email
  • Re-enter email 
  • Passport number
  • Type 
  • Expiry date
  • Intended date of entry
  • Intended length of stay in Vietnam (number of days)
  • Purpose of entry
  • Intended temporary residential address in Vietnam
  • City/Province (that you visit/stay)

If you have a hosting organization, click on the plus sign next to the "the Inviting/guarentering agency/organization" section and fill out its name and address. In case you travel with under 14-year-old children, click on the plus sign next to the "Under 14 years old accompanying child(ren) included in your passport" section. After that, you can write their names, gender, and date of birth as well as upload their portrait photos. Otherwise, you are allowed to skip these two sections.

Moving to the last section - Requested Information, you can see that the start and end date for your visa issued has been filled in automatically.


 After that, you have to choose your entry and exit checkpoint. And finally, you write the Captcha code and check the box to confirm you have truthfully declared all relevant details.


Step 3: Verify information and make payment


After verifying your information, you will receive a verification code. Remember to write it down as you will need it in the future. The e-visa fee is $25 and you can pay through online options.

As stated in the initial instruction, your application will be processed in three working days. Specifically, after applying for the e-Visa online, you will need to wait three working days for your visa to be issued. After three days, you can search for your visa at this link.


Enter your registration code, email, and date of birth to gain access to your visa. Download the .pdf file and print your e-Visa in two copies for safety when traveling. If three working days have passed and your visa is still unavailable, email Vietnam's e-Visa Support at this page. 


Finally, upon arrival in Vietnam, please present the letter at the point of entry.


* Note that if you apply during peak tourist season, it might take longer to process. Therefore, if possible, complete your e-visa application one week in advance.
