The history – Turtle Lake travel guide
Turtle Lake's story is as colorful as the city itself. According to ancient records, the location of Turtle Lake was once the Kham Khuyet Gate of the Bat Quai Citadel, built during the reign of Emperor Gia Long. It later was demolished to construct the smaller Phung Citadel.
Following the French occupation in 1859, Phung Citadel was leveled, and the entire city, then known as Saigon, was replanned. In 1878, the French built a water tower at this location to supply water to the residents. However, in 1921, the tower was dismantled due to insufficient capacity, and replaced by a monument featuring three bronze French soldiers with a small water fountain, symbolizing their conquest and dominance over Indochina.
Between 1965 and 1967, after the French withdrew from Vietnam, Saigon Turtle Lake we see today was officially constructed based on the design by architect Nguyen Ky. During four years (1970-1974), the place was renovated and five concrete columns were added to enhance its stability. From above, the lake appears like a blooming flower in the clear blue water.
The legends of architecture
Turtle Lake's unique design isn't just eye-catching – it's steeped in legend and mystery. Due to its rather unusual architecture, Turtle Lake is linked to the urban myth of a geomantic intervention. A legend says that in 1967, the newly-elected president Nguyen Van Thieu of the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam Government), was feeling a bit, well, insecure. So he invited a famous Chinese feng shui master to assess the land at Independence Palace (now known as Reunification Convention Hall).
The feng shui master praised the palace for being built on a dragon vein. The dragon's head lay at Independence Palace, but the dragon's tail was thrashing about over at the location of Turtle Lake. Now, a thrashing dragon tail might sound cool, but in feng shui terms, it's bad news for political stability. To secure the presidential position long-term, a large turtle needed to be cast to hold down the dragon's tail.
Mr. Thieu and his wife apparently not ones to question mystical advice, jumped into action. They transformed the square into an octagonal water lake, resembling a bagua (a feng shui symbol used for protection). Four spiral walkways lead to the central area, which features a memorial and a bronze turtle carrying a stone stele.
Additionally, the central area has a high column with a petal-shaped top. It's not just pretty – it's practical. This column is seen as a large nail driven into the lake to pin down the dragon's tail. Sadly, in early 1976, the stele and the turtle were destroyed in an explosion. Despite the turtle's absence, locals still refer to the lake as Turtle Lake, instead of its official name today.
Nowadays, locals and tourists alike gaze at the lake's octagonal shape, trying to spot the hidden yin-yang symbol. And that towering column? Some swear it looks like a sword, still keeping that dragon in check after all these years.
