Indonesia has recently implemented changes to its visa policy, resulting in the suspension of visa-free entry for citizens of 159 countries and territories. This decision, which took effect following a decree issued by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights on June 7th, aims to address concerns regarding potential disruptions of public order and the transmission of diseases.
Authorities in Indonesia have taken measures to crack down on various issues, including tourists engaging in disrespectful behavior such as posing naked for photos at sacred sites, driving motorbikes without helmets, and committing crimes. Alongside these concerns, there is also a focus on preventing the introduction of diseases from individuals coming from countries not certified as disease-free by the World Health Organization.
As a result of these changes, all tourists must now obtain a visa from Indonesian missions abroad or through the electronic visa system. The government's decision to temporarily halt visa-free visits is intended to mitigate potential risks associated with individuals entering the country without proper scrutiny and documentation, ensuring a more secure and controlled environment for both visitors and residents.

It is worth noting that since 2016, Indonesia has waived visa requirements for travelers from 169 countries, including 10 ASEAN countries. However, the recent adjustments mean that only nationals of Brunei, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam can currently enjoy visa-free travel to Indonesia. For intra-ASEAN travel, visitors can still enjoy visa-free access and stay in Indonesia for up to 30 days with a confirmed return ticket. Travelers should familiarize themselves with the updated visa regulations and ensure compliance to make their journey to Indonesia a smooth and unforgettable experience.
