China Emerges as Vietnam's Second-Largest Tourism Market

In an exciting development, China has taken the spotlight as Vietnam's second-largest source of tourists, following closely behind South Korea. The month of May witnessed a remarkable surge, with over 146,000 Chinese travelers exploring the beauty of Vietnam—an impressive 23% increase compared to the previous month, as reported by the General Statistics Office.

Since mid-January, when China cautiously reopened its borders, Vietnam has warmly welcomed a total of 398,000 Chinese visitors. However, it's worth noting that South Korea still maintains its position as the top contributor, with over 1.3 million tourists delighting in the wonders of Vietnam during the first five months of this year.

The United States proudly claims the third spot with 307,000 arrivals. Despite a slight 6.9% decline in international tourist arrivals during May, Vietnam wholeheartedly embraced over 916,000 foreign

visitors, painting a promising picture of recovery.

In the first five months of 2023, Vietnam embraced a grand total of 4.6 million international tourists, surpassing the halfway mark of the ambitious target of 8 million for the year. While this is undoubtedly a significant achievement, it's essential to acknowledge that it represents 63% of the pre-pandemic levels.

Reflecting on 2019, the year preceding the global pandemic, China proudly held the title of Vietnam's top source of foreign arrivals, with an impressive 5.5 million visitors. HSBC's forecast predicts a range of 3 to 4.5 million Chinese visitors to Vietnam this year, accounting for an inspiring 50% to 80% of pre-pandemic levels.

Looking ahead, legislators are eagerly preparing to vote on a bill that aims to enhance tourism facilitation by extending the validity of e-visas from 30 days to a maximum of three months and enabling multiple entries. This exciting development will undoubtedly contribute to further growth and exploration.
