The airport, now capable of handling up to 500,000 passengers annually, underwent a comprehensive transformation at a cost of VND1.460 trillion (US$60.1 million), with Dien Bien Province contributing VND1.55 trillion in land.
Key enhancements of Dien Bien Airport include upgrades to the runway, taxiway, apron runway, and passenger terminal, along with the installation of a modern lighting system and security fence. The newly revamped two-floor passenger terminal features dedicated spaces for arrivals and departures on the first floor, while the second floor boasts a spacious waiting area, a business class lounge, retail stores, and various services.

Business class passengers now enjoy a 90-square-meter exclusive lounge, while a dining area and smoking room cater to the comfort of all travelers. The baggage carousel has been strategically positioned on the first floor near the entrance for convenient access.

Adjacent to the existing runway, the newly constructed 2,400-meter runway can accommodate larger aircraft such as the Airbus A320 and A321. Dien Bien Airport now boasts three aprons for A320/A321 aircraft and equivalents, along with an additional one for ATR72s. The upgraded lighting system ensures safe aircraft guidance during nighttime and adverse weather conditions, meeting international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization.

Notably, a Vietnam Airlines aircraft recently conducted a successful test landing at the airport on December 1 to validate technical parameters. Starting last Saturday, Vietjet Air initiated direct flights from HCMC to Dien Bien, while Vietnam Airlines introduces daily flights between Hanoi and Dien Bien.

Situated near the historic Battle of Dien Bien Phu, the airport preserves a memorial on its premises between the old and new runways. This location holds significant historical importance as it witnessed the defeat of the French in 1954, marking a pivotal moment in the end of French control over Indochina by the Vietnamese guerilla insurgency.
